Helping Others to Help Themselves

I am a Humanistic therapist and I believe in the ability of every individual to:
  • grow and develop their full potential
  • make positive long-lasting changes
  • tap into their own inner wisdom
  • live in a full and satisfying way
The above includes being able to manage and overcome difficulties and problems along the way. These are part of life and yet they offer;
  • an opportunity for new understanding
  • a new way to cope
  • a new way of living
  • an opportunity to improve relationships with others.
Humanistic therapy focuses on health whilst acknowledging that our lives today are influenced by our past experience. This includes the result of a past trauma or a major event often associated with loss of some kind.
It also includes the way we have developed a view of who we are and our ability to deal with life in general, plus difficulties that come our way. Sometimes that includes a belief that we should be able to manage or cope with everything on our own without showing too much emotion.
I work integratively incorporating the theory and reflections of other models in order to be of best service to the client and their particular needs. My approach is collaborative and based on the relational.
Counselling and psychotherapy offers a safe, non-judgmental and confidential environment in which clients can bring their concerns. It is a place in which individuals can explore areas of their life that are painful, problematic and/or are making them feel stuck. Sometimes the person can identify a particular difficulty and sometimes there is just a sense that life has become difficult and that they feel unhappy, depressed, lost or confused. By providing a relationship of trust and acceptance and by actively listening to the client, an individual can;
  • better understand themselves or their difficulties
  • find a way forward
  • broaden their choices/options
  • resolve a situation or problem
  • bring closure to past hurts and regrets
  • discover a more meaningful and satisfying way to live.
I use the terms counselling and psychotherapy interchangeably. However I generally see psychotherapy as addressing deeper issues over a longer period of time. Whichever word is used the therapeutic work is always orientated towards growth and change and is continually evaluated in partnership with you.
